Thanks to the quick work of a Ford Motor Co. task force, first-responders in the City are scheduled to receive 1,500 protective face shields on Tuesday, March 31.
Taylor is just one of many cities receiving the protective gear as part of the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. The worldwide crisis has depleted medical supplies and protective equipment across the board, forcing manufacturers to think of new and different ways to use their facilities to help ease the strain on the system. Ford executives received a call from the famed Mayor Clinic on March 19, and quickly assigned a task force to address the shortage of protective equipment.
According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, "Within one week, a small team of designers from a shop within the company called D-Ford would collaborate virtually to review plans, design prototypes, build the early designs, meet with doctors, test prototypes, redesign, re-test and redesign." The plan went so well that Ford was able to create 25,000 of the masks in one week for beleaguered users in New York City, and has now ra ramped up to 40,000 with a goal of 1 million per week.
