Steve DeSmet has been promoted to director of the Probation Department at the 23rd District Court.

In order to help focus the department, DeSmet collaborated with the staff to introduce the following new mission statement:

“The mission of the 23rd District Court Probation Department is to work with the probationers, their family members, and victims, in an ethical and professional manner. Additionally, we will work to reduce the frequency and financial toll of crime in the community by enforcing accountability and assisting our probationers in improving their lives through resources and motivation for positive change.”

DeSmet joined the court in November of 2014 as a probation officer for the Downriver Regional DWI Court Program. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University and is now pursuing a Master of Science in Judicial Administration there.

When he joined the court, he brought with him experience working in family court as a juvenile probation officer. In August 2016 he was promoted to coordinator of the program and led the charge for expansion and change of how it handles connecting participants who are most in need with treatment in the community.

As of July 2018, he was promoted to director of Probation while continuing in his role as coordinator.

Judge Geno Salomone, Judge Joseph Slaven and Court Administrator Deanna Warunek are enthusiastic about the knowledge and positive influence he brings to the Probation Department.
